The Department of Palliative Care at St. Mary’s Hospital provides care and support to patients with serious, life-limiting illnesses. Our goal is to relieve pain and suffering, and help patients and their families achieve the best possible quality of life through all the stages of an illness.
We use a whole-person, patient-centred approach to care. Our interdisciplinary team provides integrated health services to treat the complex range of physical and psychological issues associated with life-limiting illnesses.
We understand that the difficulties and challenges of living with a serious illness are different for everyone. Our team knows that people vary greatly in their ability to talk about their condition and their feelings, and in what treatments they are willing to consider. We respect the individual experience and values of our patients, and strive to ensure that their needs are addressed and their stories are heard. We also make every effort to be sensitive to the needs of patients from different backgrounds. We recognize how important it is to consider factors such as religion, culture, socioeconomics, gender and sexual orientation for our patients’ comfort and wellbeing.
St. Mary’s Hospital is a community hospital in the Côte des Neiges (CDN) area of Montreal that cares for a diverse, multilingual and international population. It is part of the CIUSSS ODIM* health network.
St. Mary’s is also a teaching hospital. The Department of Palliative Care is actively teaching palliative medicine to family medicine residents and palliative fellows from McGill University. The Department is affiliated with McGill University Palliative Care. In addition to training physicians, our various interdisciplinary team members are also involved in teaching trainees in their respective disciplines.
